Identification of predictive variables for the recurrence of oral mucocele

2018

Background Oral mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland lesion with good prognosis after surgical removal. However, its recurrence is not rare, sometimes bothersome. This study aimed to identify the possible predictive variables affecting the recurrence rate of oral mucocele. Material and Methods The histoclinical data of 164 patients diagnosed with oral mucocele were retrospectively obtained by reviewing dental records. The predictive variables for its recurrence were identified by analyzing its recurrence rate according to clinical variables. Results The recurrence rate showed the significant differences according to location and age. Oral mucocele recurred with significantly hig…

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: An uncertain nosological entity. Report of a case

2016

Introduction: Appendiceal mucocele is a relatively rare condition characterized by progressive dilation of the appendix caused by intraluminal accumulation of mucoid substance. Its incidence is 0.07 - 0,63% of all appendectomies performed. Case report: We report the case of a 70-year-old man who came to our observation with gravative pain in right lower abdominal region. A computed tomography abdominal scan revealed a cystic/tubular structure like an appendicular mass with wall enhancement but without calcifications suggestive of a mucocele. Into peritoneal cavity we found profuse mucinous material with a 1,5 cm size parietal nodule. We also identified a free perforation of the cecum with c…

Expression of Remodelling Enzymes (MMP-2, MMP-9) in Normal and Pathological Oral Mucosa Samples

2008

Introduction. The oral cavity contains many structures compressed in a small area. It is exposed to chronic or recurrent, physical and chemical trauma leading to mucosal reactions (e.g. hyperplasia, dysplasia and tumors). For a long time, our group has been studying the expression of some metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) in healthy and pathological human oral mucosa through immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR to investigate the entity of the remodelling process in the different cases. Matherials and Methods. In this paper we investigate a sample of normal oral mucosa and four pathological samples (mucocele, fibroma, dysplasia and carcinoma). We identified the localization of MMP-2 and MMP-9 th…

Sphenoid sinus mucocele : an unusual complication of head and neck irradiation in a North African woman

2019

Mucocele is a common benign lesion otherwise rarely located in the sphenoid sinus. Some complications after head and neck irradiation have been described in the literature until now. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a sphenoid sinus mucocele in a North African patient treated some years before with radiotherapy for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We extend the literature review about this infrequent finding, of which head and neck surgeons should be aware. Key words:Mucocele, sphenoid sinus mucocele, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, radiotherapy, North African.
